Majuro, Marshall Islands – The organizing committee for the Micronesian Women’s Conference are continuing preparations for the Micronesian Women’s Conference to be held from 8-10 August in Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). Delegates from the RMI, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, and the U.S. Territories of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, will collectively identify opportunities and challenges to develop strategic recommendations to increase progress towards gender equality and the empowerment of women in the thematic areas of economic empowerment, eliminating violence, health, climate change and leadership.
The Conference is an initiative by Her Excellency Dr. Hilda C. Heine, President of the RMI and the first female Micronesian President which will explore the complexities of gender equality from a regional perspective. President Heine states, “It’s time for us to collectively develop our shared agenda for gender equality and promote this in our countries, in our region and more broadly in the Pacific region. The Conference will voice the concerns of Micronesian women on the regional and global stage and our role as Micronesian women is to ensure these concerns are addressed.”
Country delegations will be joined by regional and international experts to explore different gender equality dimensions of the Conference thematic areas, with the Micronesian Women’s Conference Outcomes Document to be released in the final session of the Conference. The Conference is supported by the Government of the Marshall Islands in partnership with Women United Together Marshall Islands with funding support from the European Union, the Government of Australia, and the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Other development partners providing support include the Pacific Community, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Asian Development Bank, and the International Organization for Migration, and UN agencies.
